本书包括三部分，114章。是由Paul Auerbach教授带领一个野外医学的专家团队编写而成，目的在于指导大家在野外遇到各种各样急症医学和健康问题的时候，在时间和资源都极为缺乏的情况下，如何有效地诊断和治疗各种病症，为此提供经过证实的、可行的、带大量详细图示的指导手册。本书可作为一本教科书使用，被广泛称做“野外医学圣经”。
