正是意识到上述问题的存在，本书的主编美国梅奥医学院的Leonard Gunderson和北卡罗来纳医学院综合肿瘤中心的Joel E. Tepper博士联合多位北美各大放疗中心教授编写了这本《临床放射肿瘤学》第三版。本书除延续了2000年和2007年前两版的全面细致、深入浅出等特点外，还增加了一些新特色、新内容。
全书依然是分为放射肿瘤学基础、技术和方法、疾病各论三部分。第一部分放射肿瘤学基础从放射生物、放射物理以及放疗相关的其他学科三个角度分章撰写，且较前两版新加了“生活质量与晚期并发症”一节，充分体现了关心肿瘤患者长期存活质量与关注各种肿瘤治疗方法同等重要的国际趋势。第二部分技术和方法除详细介绍了常用的近距离治疗、适形及调强放疗、术中放疗、全身照射、热疗、放射性核素治疗外，还对质子、中子、介子等国内少见的放疗技术做了概述；且专辟章节从基础到临床对国内外均争议较大的放射外科治疗（γ刀等）与直线加速器放疗进行了讨论。较前两版新增了图像引导放疗的内容，并在转移癌治疗方法一节中增加了更多关于预后相对较好的转移癌采用积极疗法的建议和讨论，展示了近年来放疗技术的发展。第三部分系统地分病种介绍了放疗的临床应用情况，且每个病种均从流行病学及病因学、预防及早期诊断、病理及播散方式、分子生物学、临床表现检查和分期、各期别治疗、放疗技术、治疗原则、讨论及展望等多层次展开阐述，从放射肿瘤学的角度出发，并将放疗与其相关学科紧密联系。较前两版新增了中枢神经系统良性肿瘤及贲门癌放疗的内容。
本书数据及参考文献详实，编写态度科学严谨，图文并茂、全面且便于查找，适用于放射肿瘤医师及其他部门肿瘤医师阅读及参考。此外，本书从基础到临床多角度、多层次、教科书式的阐述方式，使其不失为一本较好的放射肿瘤医师入门学习资料。
