TAKE-HOME MESSAGE

This is an updated guideline from the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) on the diagnosis, assessment, and treatment of pulmonary embolism (PE). Most recommendations from the 2008 guideline have remained valid. New considerations include recently identified predisposing factors for venous thromboembolism (VTE), simplification of clinical prediction rules, age-adjusted D-dimer cutoffs, risk stratification of intermediate-risk pulmonary embolism, and treatment and secondary prophylaxis of VTE with newer oral anticoagulants.

Although many prior recommendations continue to be valid, new data have led to additional recommendations on the diagnosis and treatment of PE proposed in these 2014 ESC guidelines.
