TAKE-HOME MESSAGE

In this trial with 12-month follow-up, researchers randomized 331 patients with superficial femoral and/or popliteal artery disease to undergo paclitaxel-coated balloon with percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) or conventional PTA. The group treated with the drug-coated balloon had significantly better patency and were nearly eight times less likely to require target lesion revascularization (P < .001).

Drug-coated balloon use is associated with significantly improved patency and reduction in need for revascularization when compared with standard angioplasty.
