TAKE-HOME MESSAGE

Type 1 diabetic patients—regardless of the presence of proliferative retinopathy—had significant putamen and right thalamic volume loss compared with controls. Compared with controls, patients with type 1 diabetes and proliferative retinopathy had significant volume loss of the bilateral nucleus accumbens. Further, cognitive dysfunction was found to be significantly associated with a lower left nucleus accumbens volume.

The authors conclude that subcortical, but not cortical, volume loss is associated with cognitive dysfunction in this group of patients, regardless of microangiopathy.
