The authors calculated the percentage of thromboembolic and hemorrhagic events that occurred over a 2-year follow-up period in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation undergoing closure of the left atrial appendage with an occlusion device (N = 167). Implantation was successful in 95.6% of patients, with 5.38% having intraoperative complications. Mortality during follow-up (10.5%) was mostly non-cardiac related. Stroke occurred in 4.4% of patients and bleeding in 10.1%.

In the second year post-implantation, left atrial appendage closure with an occlusion device was associated with fewer thromboembolic and hemorrhagic events than expected from risk scores in patients contraindicated for oral anticoagulants.
